Gay AND Christian? Yes! It IS Possible! A Beginner’s Guide

by Mary Pearson

God is perfect.  People are not.

This article (small book) will explain how incorrect translations, misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the Original Scriptures have lead to unjustified prejudice against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender, and intersex people.

No disrespect for God or God's Holy Word is meant or implied by this booklet. The Bible is the foundation of my faith in Jesus Christ, and my intention is to honour Scripture with ACCURATE information, and through that information to explain that God's love is for ALL.

Mary Pearson – Confessions of a Christian Lesbian

Mary PearsonChristian Gays has come about as a result of many years of turmoil and depression at being unable to reconcile my sexuality with my Christianity. It is a labour of love with the mission of reaching other hurting gays who believe that they cannot be Christian if they are gay. Trust me. It IS possible to be gay AND Christian! I am a born again Christian lesbian!

At the age of 12, I fell in love with my swimming counselor at camp and from that time on, I knew I was "different". This incredibly wonderful (straight) woman has remained a faithful friend to me for over 60 years now.

Jesus Loves Me. This I Know . . . Even If I’m Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual or Transgendered

"Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so . . . " unless you are Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Intersex or Queer, in which case you are told that Jesus loves everyone EXCEPT me. Well it's time to set the record straight - if you'll pardon the expression. Jesus loves ESPECIALLY His GLBTIQ children - for the Bible tells me so!

The Protestant Bible is like a library consisting of 66 books, written by about 40 authors over a period from about 2000 BC to about 70 AD. It is divided into the Old Testament (before Christ) and the New Testament (after Christ). In these 66 books, there are 1,189 chapters containing about 31,273 verses. The final divisions into chapters and verses occurred only about 500 years ago for ease of referencing. They are not part of the original texts.

Gay by God. Proud by Choice!

Gay by God

PRIDE in being gay is not something that comes naturally when we live in a world that tells us we are “evil” and “immoral”. For most of us, it is first a road of self-awareness, and then of self-acceptance. We then need to take a further step to determine the consequences of our “Coming Out” to family, friends and co-workers. For many, the losses are not worth revealing the truth and so they remain closeted. This is understandable.

For those who are able to accept themselves for who they are, and have risked the consequences of being “Out”, there is deserved PRIDE in acknowledging the truth.

Bible Translation Errors – The Long Version

This is the original longer version.

On May 5, 2001, when Pope John Paul II begged God's forgiveness for sins committed by Roman Catholics against Jews, heretics and women, he acknowledged that the "Church" has been wrong in the past. It also took the Catholic Church 359 years to admit that they were wrong when they accused Galileo of heresy, condemning him to death, unless he recanted that the earth rotates around the sun. It was considered heresy to challenge the belief that the Earth was the centre of the universe. (Read Galileo's Story.)

Note from Mary:  There are now over 400 English Versions of the Bible!

"Proud as a peacock" - The phrase comes from the glorious fan-shaped, multi-coloured (not quite rainbow-coloured) plumage of the male peafowl when he is courting his mate.

Thus, just as the peacock, someone who is "proud as a peacock" is similarly "strutting his or her stuff".

As gays and lesbians, for years we have hidden our "tail feathers" in closets, hidden the beauty of God's creation in us, afraid to "strut our stuff" because "the church" said that we were an abomination to God. That mindset infiltrated society in general, and many of us adopted that belief for ourselves.

The Sin of Sodom Was NOT Homosexuality! – Original Article

This is the original article, written as a "letter to the editor" before same sex marriage was legal in Canada, by Mary Pearson.

If you wish to read a more condensed generic version which is suitable for magazine publication, please Click Here.

Note: This "letter to the editor" is in response to an article in The Kingston Whig-Standard regarding Bill C-250 (same-sex marriage).

In response to the article about Bill C-250, Presbyterian minister Rev. Tristan Emmanuel suggests that "legislation that allows gay marriage identifies Canada as the North American equivalent of ancient Sodom", I would like to suggest that although current tradition suggests that the sin of Sodom was homosexuality, a more thorough investigation of Scripture indicates this isn't the case. Since this is so fundamental to Rev. Emmanuel's opinion, if he is wrong in the interpretation of his basic premise, mightn't he also be wrong in his whole position of discrimination against gays?

The Sin of Sodom Was NOT Homosexuality! – Shortened Version

Nov 21, 2005 - This is a shortened version suitable for publication.
If you wish to read the longer, original "letter to the editor", please Click Here.

For years people have accepted without question, that the sin of Sodom was homosexuality. A more careful examination of the story itself, combined with other passages in both Old and New Testaments, will indicate this not to be so.

Adam & Steve? – A Quick Look At Genesis 5:1-3

We gays often hear that God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. Well if God didn't create Steve, who did? Many gays believe that we were created by God, with the same love that God created Adam and Eve.

It is my contention that it is very possible that God did indeed create Adam and Steve, and Louise and Sue, at the same time or after He created Adam and Eve. The reasons that I hold this belief are many.

First, Cain was the son of Adam and Eve, but where did Cain's wife come from if God did not create her? If God did not create her, then she would have to have been his sister or his mother (Eve) if Adam and Eve were the only ones "begetting" - i.e. an incestuous relationship no matter how you look at it. It only stands to reason that God created more than just Adam and Eve. Just because his other "created" children aren't mentioned doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

The Book of Romans – Some Background & A Little Insight

Many of us are painfully aware that two of the most-used Bible verses against gays are Romans 1:26,27.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

It's important to know the truth of these verses, first for self-acceptance, and then to educate those who would use them against us.

Deuteronomy 22:5 – Cross Dressing

Prince Charles & Camilla in matching kilts (skirts?)Cross Dressing, Transvestism, Transsexuality

Recently, on our FaceBook Group, someone asked about Deuteronomy 22:5 with regard to cross dressing, transvestites, and transsexuals.  These are a few thoughts on the matter.

A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.  ~ Deut. 22:5

Abomination

1.  The biblical interpretation of the word "abomination" relates to any act of uncleanness as set out in the Holiness Code, such as eating shellfish (I DO love my lobster!), trimming sideburns, touching the skin of a dead pig (should we stone all football players? - just kidding), wearing clothes of two kinds of material (polyester/cotton? - check the tags on the clothes in your closet).  The list of abominations is long.  How can we discuss one abomination (cross dressing) to the exclusion of all others?

New Dads

May 23, 2017 - My daughter, Lauren, has had a baby girl for two new dads.

She wanted to do something really special for someone for her 45th birthday, and 45 yo is the cutoff for being accepted as a surrogate, so she went through all the psychological counselling, genetic testing, surrogacy camps, and within an hour of her being posted to the website, there were 17 couples asking her to have a baby for them.

Same Sex Marriage – Terminology by Mary

Note: This "letter to the editor" is in response to an article in the Kingston Whig-Standard, Kingston, ON, Canada suggesting that same-sex marriage have a different name such as "civil union".

"Re Whig Article "Report calls for new terms to describe same-sex unions". . . . "This helps avoid potential confusion over whether the message is talking about marriage by the state versus religious marriage."

I believe this speaks to the foundation of the controversy.  Terminology is of the essence, but equality is also our Canadian heritage, so perhaps a greater change is necessary to accommodate the differences between church and state.

Astrology and the Bible

The subject of astrology and spirituality based on input from "The Universe" has come up a few times in the Chat Rooms and within the List Serve so I have chosen to add this Article so that others will know how the Admin of Christian Gays feels about it.

I believe that the Bible teaches that God created (Genesis 1:14, Psalm 8:3), and arranged the stars into recognizable groups (constellations) (Job 9:9, 26:13, 38:31,32 and Amos 5:8) for "signs" and "seasons". He calls them by name (Psalm 147:4).

However, I believe that the term "signs" has been misinterpreted to substantiate things like astrology and horoscopes, when the real meaning is that they were to be navigational indicators for people to chart their courses around the earth and through the galaxies, and for a guide to the seasons, tides, weather, etc.

Moral Issues? Family Values? I Think NOT!

As a born-again Christian, I listen to Christian radio and TV and I hear daily about "moral issues" and "family values". They don't mean "morality" or "family". They mean gay marriage, so why not call it what it is - anti-gay prejudice! They're talking about keeping their "club" reserved for only those who fit their qualifications.

  • Traditional marriage, according to the Bible
  • Consists of one man and one or more women, and concubines
  • Women are the property of their father until married, and then become the property of their husband
  • If a woman is not a virgin at the time of marriage, she shall be stoned
  • A rapist must marry his victim
  • If a man dies childless, his brother must marry the widow
  • Inter-faith marriages are forbidden
  • Divorce is forbidden

My Parents Won’t Accept Me

This article is the result of a letter to a dear man who requested counseling about the fact that his father will not accept his homosexuality, even after 30 years. His father has told him that he can't be Christian if he is gay. Since this is such a universal problem for us all, I decided to print my response to him, in the hopes that it may help others.

First, there is no way that you are going to change your father's mind about homosexuality. Only the Holy Spirit can do that, so stop trying. Instead, accept that he doesn't accept you, as hard as that is, and then change YOU. I'm not talking about changing your orientation of course. I'm talking about changing your attitude about needing your father's acceptance. We all want to be accepted by our parents, but sometimes that just doesn't happen, so we need to live our lives in the reality of today, not in the hope that someone else will change in the future.

Fear of Same-Sex Marriage

While sitting in Church this morning, I was subjected to a message of prejudice, hatred and bigotry from the pulpit, directed against homosexuals regarding the upcoming legislation which would allow marriage by people of the same sex. As an "OUT" lesbian Christian - YES! It IS Possible! - I feel an obligation to speak out for my brothers and sisters who would be subjected to persecution for taking a stand against this behaviour. So many of us must sit silently in your congregations every Sunday but you are hurting us.

To summarize this message, it was a call, indeed a plea, accompanied by literature in the bulletin, for Christians to take action against this movement to "protect conventional male/female heterosexual marriage".

My first question would be, "What exactly does heterosexual marriage need protection from?" Is there a shortage of love? If two gay people love each other, does that mean that there will not be enough love to go around to "straights"?

Soften the ground of our being

Got Financial Problems? – Count It A Blessing! by Mary

Two things I asked of You. Do not refuse me before I die:

(1) Keep deception and lies far from me,

(2) Give me neither poverty nor riches;

Feed me with the food that is my portion, that I not be full and deny You and say, "Who is the LORD?" Or that I not be in want and steal, and profane the name of my God.    - Proverbs 30: 7-9

So many people write to me asking for prayer about their personal finances. Many are over their heads, at the end of their rope, and just don't know what to do, so now they are asking for prayer.

Tithing (by Mary)

Well I can't imagine anyone voluntarily selecting to read an article about tithing, but it was on my heart, and so I sent it out as part of one of my Newsletters. If you are about to read it, then I know that God is speaking to you, so I pray that you will be blessed.

ON MY HEART

Very often people ask how God can allow such poverty in the world. I have long had the dream that if I ever had big money, my mission would be to at least provide clean water to all of God's children. It is just such a basic need. Of course there are so many needs around the world, including within our own cities, for affordable housing and even for sufficient food and health care for all.

Straight Teacher Asked To Step Down Because She Will Not Condemn Gays!

Kingston West Free Methodist Church has asked Lauren Min-Pearson to step down from her involvement with the teens at her Church. First and foremost, Lauren is a committed born-again Christian with an intense desire to serve the Lord in her personal life and in her Church community life. She also graduated with distinction as a Child and Youth Worker and has taught English in Korea for 3 years. She is a full-time employee at Pathways For Children and so is not only well qualified to teach these teens but also has a love and understanding of their needs. Perhaps no one is more suited than she to bring the necessary requirements to the position she once held.

Letter to Betty Robison of Life Outreach International

Dear Betty,

On May 5, 2001, Pope Paul II begged God's forgiveness for sins committed by Roman Catholics against Jews, heretics and women. By doing so, he acknowledged that the "Church" has been wrong in the past.

This morning, your husband, James, and your guest, Joyce Meyer, acknowledged that within the different denominations, we all think we are right, but that we are going to be in for some surprises when we get to heaven. They both acknowledged that perhaps they could be wrong in some areas.

I contend that the church is wrong once more, and that Christian leaders have a responsibility to investigate another travesty perpetrated against its people.
